ROTARIANS LEAD THE WAY IN NIGERIA - D9110

A team of 20 Rotarians in Zones 27 and 28 kicked off an initiative in November 2007 that will Share Rotary and Make Dreams Real in the developing nation of Nigeria. Developed by both Director Mike Johns and Director-Elect Tom Thorfinnson and led by Tom, the Rotarians attended the West Africa Project Fair, met with Rotary leaders, and visited project sites in Kano, Kaduna, Abuja and Lagos. Team members also participated in polio Sub-National Immunization Days.

The team’s connections with credible and trustworthy Nigerian Rotarians resulted in a menu of worthwhile Rotary Foundation World Community Service Matching Grants projects that districts and clubs are encouraged to support – providing toilets for school children who have none, digging boreholes (wells) to provide safe water for settlements of up to 100,000, equipping hospitals, orphanages, schools, and many more. It is our hope that these projects will lead to a larger, more encompassing project in Nigeria that will address many of the basic human needs to help the Nigerians towards economic self sufficiency.

The team is the first of many that will Lead the Way in providing Service Above Self as Rotarians Lend A Hand and Sow the Seeds of Love in a region of the world where Rotary is making a difference in the lives of people daily. Team members included:

PDG Roger Borup (D6000)

District 6000

Since its beginnings over 13 years ago, FAMSCO has grown and matured and has become a source of pride for the Rotarians of District 6000. There can be no doubt that the 72 vehicles and over 200 tons of equipment and supplies that have been shipped by FAMSCO so far have helped to improve - and save - many lives. With the help of Rotarians and the support of Rotary International, this remarkable endeavor will continue to make a real difference in the lives of many in the developing world who struggle daily just to get by.

Reach Out and Read trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading
aloud and to give books to children at pediatric check-ups from six months to five years of age,
with a special focus on children growing up in poverty. By building on the unique relationship
between parents and medical providers, Reach Out and Read helps families and communities
encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for success in reading.
